Stocking a First Reef Tank: A Priced-Out Livestock Budget
A realistic first-year livestock list priced at today's actual market medians, not forum guesses.

"How much will the livestock cost?" gets answered on forums with guesses and nostalgia. This index exists to do better: below is a deliberately ordinary first-year stocking plan for a ~30–40 gallon mixed reef, priced two ways from today's actual cross-vendor data — at the median (paying typical prices for ordinary specimens) and at the market low (patient shopping, cheapest current listing of each type).
This is a pricing exercise, not a stocking prescription — the species are standard hardy-beginner canon, but check compatibility and tank size for your own setup before buying anything.

Add a modest mixed cleanup crew (~20 pieces — snails and hermits run roughly $1.99–$16.49 per animal at listing prices, with real savings in multi-packs; per-piece analysis here) and shipping — typically one or two overnight boxes depending on how you group orders.
What the two columns teach
- The gap between typical and patient is real money. The market-low column isn't fantasy pricing — every number is a listing you could click today. The catch is that the lows are spread across vendors, and chasing each one separately loses the difference to shipping. Consolidate orders; the box fee is the real boss of livestock budgeting.
- The corals are the budget's soft spot, in your favor. Every coral on the list is a fast grower sold in frag sizes — GSP, zoas, toadstools, mushrooms all turn one frag into many. The patient version of this tank buys small and grows the difference.
- The centerpiece is where medians matter most. The hammer is the list's most expensive line and its widest range — exactly the purchase where checking the live cross-vendor page before paying beats any rule of thumb.
- Prices won't drift while you cycle. Reef prices hold still between promotion events (measured here), so the budget you price during a six-week cycle will still be accurate at stocking time — and a vendor sale event is a schedule bonus, not something to wait on.
